普通翠鸟
A small, compact kingfisher with iridescent blue upperparts, orange-rufous underparts, and a white throat patch bordered by black. The bill is long, straight, and dagger-like, dark grey above and orange below; legs are bright red-orange. Males have an entirely black bill, while females show a reddish lower mandible—though this distinction is not visible here. Widespread across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, it is commonly seen perched near water.
The Common Kingfisher inhabits clear, slow-moving or still freshwater bodies such as rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and estuaries with abundant fish and suitable perching sites; it prefers areas with overhanging vegetation or bare branches for hunting and nesting burrows in earthen banks along watercourses.
Primarily piscivorous, feeding on small fish (typically 2–8 cm long) caught by plunge-diving from a perch; also consumes aquatic insects, crustaceans, and tadpoles when fish are scarce. It swallows prey headfirst after beating it against the perch to subdue and align it.
Solitary and highly territorial outside breeding season; males defend territories year-round. Perches conspicuously on branches or wires overlooking water, scanning for prey before diving vertically into the water. Nests in burrows excavated in sandy or loamy riverbanks, typically 1–2 m above water level; both sexes share incubation and chick-rearing duties.
